Rob Baan (CEO Koppert Cress): “Vanilla crops outside, think of Madagascar, are more likely to be damaged by bad weather conditions such as typhoons. Theft is also a problem: the pods are regularly stolen due to their high value. For these reasons, the pods are picked immature, resulting in the thin, dried-in sticks that you buy in the supermarket. We wanted to do that better, so we started producing vanilla in Dutch greenhouses. Only in this way can you imitate the ideal growing climate all year round without risky natural conditions and without pesticides or other chemical agents. The result? Four to five thousand square meters of beautiful, rich and fat vanilla pods of the highest quality.”
